the kunsthalle

Situated in the heart of Košice, the kunsthalle occupies a former municipal swimming pool, a post-war modernist building completed in 1962, operational until the late 1970s, and closed for decades before being reopened as a contemporary exhibition venue. A new chapter as an art institution came with Košice's European Capital of Culture designation in 2013, an era that brought exceptional exhibition projects such as Tony Cragg, Young British Artists and Triennale Košice, briefly placing the city in a wider European cultural conversation.

Since 2021, VUNU has made the kunsthalle home of its Košice location, running its hybrid program from the space while driving a rigorous exhibition agenda and periodically expanding beyond for landmark projects. In 2024, Julian Jacob Kneer's solo exhibition "PRODIGY" opened the kunsthalle c/o VUNU chapter.

The kunsthalle is a municipal institution operated by K13 - Košice Cultural Centres. The exhibition program is conceived and run by VUNU.
